Thursday, May 9, 2024

BAINBRIDGE — The fifth hike of the season will find Holly Cook leading the 9 a.m. trek Saturday, May 11 at Big Walnut Nature Preserve, located between Bainbridge and Roachdale.

Cook has had an interest since a young child in wild edibles, which now includes mushrooms. First learning about the mushrooms used in cooking, but just as important, she knows the ones that can do a person harm. Mushrooms can be found in all seasons in Indiana, even winter.

The hiking group will explore some of the different types of caps, stems and types of pore producers such as the gills and pores that are used in identification.

Mycology is the study of mushrooms. Mushrooms play an essential role in breaking down organic matter.

Big Walnut (Tall Timbers) is a beautiful preserve of old growth woods and abundant wild flowers.

To get there, go to Bainbridge and turn north at the stoplight onto North Washington Street. Follow that for 3.9 miles past North Putnam High School, and turn right on East CR 950 North. Drive 1.5 miles and the parking lot and trailhead will be on the right. The address is 9498 N. CR 425 East, Bainbridge.
