Jackson Township, Brazil bands to both perform this week

BRAZIL — This week will feature a doubleheader of performances from Brazil-based bands. The Jackson Township Community Band will perform on Thursday at the Indiana State Fair, with the Brazil Concert Band set for its usual Sunday evening performance at Forest Park.

The Jackson Township Community Band performs Thursday, Aug. 8 at the Indiana State Fair at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Indy Arts Building.

The JTCB, organized in 1915, has played at the State Fair the past 25 years. A variety of band music, several with an Indiana theme, will be presented.

Among the State Fair music is “The Brazil Special” by Davis; “America, the Beautiful” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” both arranged by Harold Walters; “The Crosley” by Henry Fillmore; “Omar Khayyam” by Karl King; “Bill Bailey” arranged by Zane van Auken; “The Fairest of the Fair” by John Philip Sousa; “Kiefer’s Special” by William Kiefer; “Speedway” by Karl Kraft; “The Music Man” arranged by Alfred Reed; “Shrine of Liberty” by Fred Jewell; and “Hey, Look Me Over” arranged by John Warrington.

On Sunday, Aug. 11 at 8 p.m., the Brazil Concert Band will salute Indiana with “Hoosiers, We!” in Forest Park rain or shine.

The BCB will perform “Greater Indiana” and “The Brazil Special,” both by J. Gus Davis. Davis was the first director of the JTCB and also conducted the BCB and the Brazil High School Band.

Sunday’s program will include “On The Banks Of The Wabash” by Paul Dresser; “The Checkered Flag,” “Roses of Memory” and “Trombone Blues,” all by Fred Jewell; “Bravura” by Charles Duble; and “Indiana State Band” by Orion Farrar.

“Hoagy Carmichael: An American Classic,” arranged by James Kessler will showcase “Lazy River,” “Star Dust,” “Heart And Soul,” “Skylark” and “Georgia On My Mind.”

Both bands will play “JTCB On Parade” by Marv Workman and arranged by BCB and JTCB member John Camp with “Back Home Again in Indiana,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and college tunes from Indiana University, Notre Dame, Purdue and Indiana State University .
