COLLEGE REPORT: Zellers, L. Carrington earn conference honors

Two Greencastle High School graduates have won awards in their respective collegiate conferences for their excellent play this season.

Anna Zellers, a 2002 GHS graduate, has twice won the volleyball specialist of the week in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association this season, while 2021 Tiger Cub grad Logan Carrington was honored as the defensive player of the week in the Mid-States Football Association.

Zellers, a junior at Trine University in northeastern Indiana, helped lead the Thunder to a 2-0 record last week with wins over Adrian and Kalamazoo. She tallied 54 assists and 19 digs to go with seven service aces. She added in a kill for good measure.

On Wednesday night at Adrian she dished out 33 assists and added 13 digs and a pair of aces as the Thunder rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Adrian. On Saturday she added 21 more assists and served up five aces as Trine swept the Hornets.

Zellers leads the team in assists this year with 458 (6.11 per set). Trine (16-4) travels to Milwaukee this weekend to take on Mount Mary and Moody Bible College.

In September, the MIAA honored Zellers for helping lead the Thunder to a 3-1 record at the Hanover Invitational.

She piled up 99 assists across four games to along with 33 digs, 6 aces, 4 kills and a block. Zellers played a key role in Trine’s victory over Rhodes on Saturday, in the fifth set the Thunder were down 7-3 and she was able to score two kills to close the gap to 9-6 and spark furious comeback to claim the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.

Carrington, a redshirt junior defensive back at Marian, finished with 12 tackles as the No. 18-ranked Knights defeated Olivet Nazarene 45-40 on Saturday to improve to 5-1.

Carrington made seven solo tackles and grabbed an interception, and ranks seventh on the team in tackles with 20 while grabbing three interceptions.

Logan’s brother Chase is a redshirt freshman defensive back but has not yet seen action this season.
