Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

•At 9:12 p.m. on Friday, Loren Leonard, 49, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 550 West just south of Reelsville in a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

As the SUV was traveling downhill, it lost traction as the road curved to the right. Leonard then drove off the edge of the road and into the ditch, rolling onto its roof.

Leonard freed himself from the vehicle and was standing nearby at the time of Deputy Robert Soilleux’s arrival. He had pain and sorness in his upper body and right shoulder and was bleeding from his right hand and left elbow. Putnam County EMS transported him to Putnam County Hospital for treatment.

The SUV was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 3:16 p.m. on Thursday, Charles R. Land, 49, Coatesville, was dumping gravel from a 2012 International SF667 at 445 Mill Springs, Heritage Lake.

After dumping a load, Land told Cpl. Brian Helmer he started to raise the bed when it caught power lines and pulled them down, snapping a power pole. The live wires laned on the truck.

Hendricks Power turned off the power and reset the pole.

Land was not injured. Helmer estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

• At 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Ryan Birkmeier, 37, Reelsville, was southbound on County Road 450 West in a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. John T. Rissler, 46, Reelsville, was northbound in a 2019 Audi Q7.

As the two vehicles met, Birkmeier crossed left of center and hit Rissler’s vehicle.

Birkmeier’s vehicle had to be towed. Deputy Randy Patrick estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 5:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Jean F. Sanon, 43, Indianapolis, was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 2005 Toyota Sienna. Terri L. Phillips, 48, Brazil, was just in front of Sanon in a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.

Both drivers told Deputy Kyle Lee that a car directly in front of Phillips had to slam on its brakes to avoid hitting a deer. Phillips was able to stop, but Sanon was not, hitting the back of Phillips’ vehicle.

Lee estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, Chelsea Baune, 25, Coatesville, was northbound on County Road 1000 East, approaching the T intersection at County Road 400 South in a 2004 Dodge Rame registered to Cyle A. Duncan.

Baune told Deputy Todd Hopkins she tried to stop but the brakes were not working. She said she left the road but could not remember what happened.

Investigation of the scene by Hopkins and Deputy Soilleux revealed that speed was likely a factor, as the truck left the road, went up an embankment then stop, making it apparent the truck went airborne. Hopkins also noted the amount of debris in the area from the truck.

The truck was towed. Baune was transported from the scene to the hospital. Hopkins estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.
