Dallas Lew Grimes, 93, of Coatesville, passed away Oct. 21, 2022, at Hendricks Regional Hospital in Danville.

He was born May 14, 1929 at his parents’ home in Tangier, Ind. He was the son of John Byron Grimes and Mabel Marie (Norman) Grimes.

He was married to Wilma Jean Wood for 54 years, and she preceded him in death in 2012.

Dallas retired from IBM in Greencastle in 1987, where he worked for 33 years. He also worked at International Harvester in Indianapolis, helped build State Road 75, and worked on the railroad close to Fillmore. He served two years in the US Army where he was stationed in Okinawa during the Korean War. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant.

He enjoyed a variety of activities including trapping, hunting, fishing, putting up hay, taking care of and raising animals, Farmall tractors, antique cars and genealogy.

In 1951, Dallas met Loretta Tharp while stationed at Port Townsend, Wash., and reconnected with her 63 years later at her garage sale. They spent eight wonderful years together, and Loretta took very good care of Dallas in his final years.

Survivors include a son, Byron Lew Grimes (Louella), daughter Bonnie Jean Flater (Shane), grandchildren Hunter Lew Grimes and Addison Jean Flater, neighbor and best friend Loretta Huff and her children, Mark Tharp, Connie Clodfelter, Dan Tharp and Jane York.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter Jean Ann Grimes and sisters Lucille Bunten and Martha Gossett.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the New Maysville Community Church, 6817 E. CR 100 North, Roachdale. Services will follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor Larry Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the Fillmore Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of Bousley Funeral Home of Coatesville.
