BLOOMINGTON — Edgewood High School hosted the Western Indiana Conference golf match on Saturday in Bloomington at Cascades Golf Course, but the Greencastle Tiger Cubs treated it like their home course in running away with the WIC title.

Greencastle shot a 326 as a team, 20 strokes better than runner-up Northview. All four players scoring points for the Cubs were all-conference members and the fifth member of their squad posted a score that would have led four other teams.

“I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys,” coach Rob Worman said. “You can see if you spend any amount of time with these guys that they are really good at working together and as a team. They push each other every day in practice. They don’t let up on each other and that is a big reason that we are where we are.”

Greencastle’s Ben Zellers made the day longer as he tied Northview’s Lane Knotter with a round of 76 that led to a playoff. The freshman made a run at the Knight senior but fell just short in a two-hole playoff. The composure of the freshman was evident according to Worman.

“When he hit his shot on the second playoff hole, he said that it was a good miss,” the coach said.

Supporting Zellers on the day was Bryson Worman, who finished just a stroke behind the leaders with a 77. Jackson Rodgers carded an 84, which put him sixth, and Zane Huber finished in a tie with two others for 11th place. Dylan Barcus shot a 92 as the fifth member, and that score was just two strokes away from all-conference scoring as well.

“Our future is bright. We lose a couple of players but have a lot returning. I am thrilled about today,” Worman said, as three of his top four players are sophomores or freshmen.

Cloverdale finished fifth on the day with a score of 369. The team was led by its own all-conference performer in Eli Kelley. Kelley shot a round of 79 for fourth place on the day. He got support from Zach Thomas with a 92, Carson Caulkins with a 98 and Houston Jobe added a 100.

Putnam County placed three of the top four golfers in the WIC meet.

“It was a little disappointing today. When things in golf don’t go your way, it is hard to get it back,” Clover coach Mark Rodgers said. “The conditions were a little tough (windy), but that is no excuse. I am proud of this team. Give Greencastle a lot of credit. They played really well, and they really treat us well and the rivalry with them is really good.”

He also added, “Eli played a pretty good round today. He has been a really solid player for us, particularly with losing Noah Betz to injury this year.”

North Putnam finished in 10th place as Brody Braeger led the way with a 101, and South Putnam was 11th,, and their low score was a 117 by Parker Harris.

“We have a lot to look forward to and these kids work really hard,” Worman said of his championship group.

All four county schools will get together again on Tuesday night for the rescheduled Putnam County match.
