MORTON — Volunteer firefighters were called out to manage a burn that got out of control in Clinton Township Sunday evening.

The Clinton Township and Bainbridge volunteer fire departments were toned at about 8:45 p.m. for a structure fire at 4962 W. U.S. 36. With the former close behind, Roachdale Fire Chief Mike Poole arrived to an active fire that involved part of a barn-like construction.

With a box alarm initially dropped before the response was downgraded, Poole deployed a crosslay and quickly tackled the fire as Bainbridge Fire and Clinton Township Fire Chief Grant Bryan arrived. It was marked completely out by 9 p.m.

“It was partial debris, really, from an already-demoed structure,” Bryan related about what was left of walls and a roof system. The debris was purposefully being burned before the fire got out of hand.

Apart from the larger structure that was attached to the demolished part, the home and a garage were threatened as exposure risks. These, however, did not incur any damage, while power to the construction was disconnected beforehand.

“They were super receptive and appreciative, so that was a plus,” Bryan said about discussing the incident with the homeowners. “That was good, because it could’ve gotten out of hand pretty quick.”

While they were released as the response was winding down, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and Putnam County EMS also made the scene.

Though it and the Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department were both en route, the Russellville Volunteer Fire Department was requested to cover Clinton Township Fire’s station.

“I was thrilled with the response and the manpower,” Bryan commented. “That was, to me, maybe the brightest side of that incident. It was the response and people’s willingness to go to work. Guys just jumped right in, so it was pretty sweet.”

No one was injured. Though personal items were inside the intact portion of the construction, these were not reported as losses.
