Banner Graphic: How important are sports to you, and what have you learned from them?

Zane Huber: “Sports have played a really important role in my life. Sports have taught me the importance of being coachable, being a good teammate and to always be your best for yourself and for those who are counting you. Playing a sport also makes us accountable to others. I want to be a good example for other young athletes and try to keep my emotions and attitude in check whether we are winning or losing.”

BG: What’s the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you in sports?

ZH: “The most embarrassing moment in my high school sports career was during sophomore swim season when I accidentally fell off the block at North Montgomery during the match. To make it worse, there is a video of the incident.”

BG: Talk about each of your sports.

ZH: “For most of high school I have been a three-sport athlete. I started playing soccer when I was three and played many years of travel soccer. I started swimming in sixth grade and picked up golf my freshman year.”

BG: What does your game day routine look like?

ZH: “Game days for me are very similar to every other day. I try to stay chill, start my day with reading my Bible, and then I lock in right before game time.”

BG: I understand you’ve missed some time over the last couple of years with some injury issues. What has fighting back from that been like, particularly to find yourself having the kind of senior season you’re having?

ZH: “The summer before my junior year I was diagnosed with an osteochondral knee defect (same injury that ended Greg Oden’s basketball career) and benign tumors on my other knee. I spent the next several months in a wheelchair and on crutches, and this ended my soccer career and kept me from swimming that year as well. Surgery was always on the table but my doctor felt like time and rest would bring the biggest healing. It was a long road, and a lot of waiting, but my faith remained strong and I truly believed that God had a plan for me whether I ever played sports again. I probably learned more in that season of my life than any other. There were setbacks along the way, but I kept fighting my way back and that is what makes this senior season so special for me.”

BG: What do you like to do outside of sports?

ZH: “Outside of sports I like to play video games, go to the gym and Friday Cane’s night with the boys. We also have a Wednesday Bible study at our house with my youth group.”

BG: Do you have any favorite college/pro sports teams or athletes you follow?

ZH: “My favorite college football team is the Georgia Bulldogs. I’m a big Pacers and Colts fan and I love the Cincinnati Reds. My favorite PGA player is Scottie Scheffler.”

BG: Are you a person who wants to watch TV shows and movies or stream something from YouTube, Twitch, TikTok etc. or do something else with your free time?

ZH: “I am definitely a movie and YouTube kind of guy.”

BG: What is something you have never done before that you would like to do someday?

ZH: “Someday I would like to travel to Europe.”

BG: What is your biggest fear?

ZH: “I have a big fear of snakes.”

BG: You’ve been placed in charge of making dinner. What’s on the menu?

ZH: “The dinner menu would be chicken tenders and fries in the air fryer.”

BG: If your house were on fire, all living things were already out and you have your keys, cell phone, wallet/purse etc., what is one thing you would go back and get?

ZH: “If my house was on fire I would grab my Bible. It’s all I need.”

BG: A family member has hit the lottery. After everything is paid off and money is set away for the future, you’ve been asked to buy something you have always wanted to get. What are you asking for?

ZH: “I would treat myself to a much needed set of nice golf clubs.”

BG: If you were to describe your personality in one word, what would that word be and why?

ZH: “I would describe myself as joyful. I have a really strong faith that centers me, and helps me see the good things around me.”

BG: What has been your favorite place to visit?

ZH: “Anna Maria Island, Fla. It has become a really special family vacation spot for us and I have a lot of great memories there.”

BG: What was your favorite school field trip?

ZH: “We went to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in fourth grade and that was so much fun. My birthday is race weekend so I’ve always loved racing”

BG: How important is support from your family and classmates to your success?

ZH: “My family is my greatest support system. I’ve been blessed to have my parents and my sister who have always been there for me. They always encourage me, pray for me and believe in me. My aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents are great cheerleaders as well.”

BG: Describe your overall school experience both academically and athletically.

ZH: “High school has been fun and challenging in both academics and athletics. I’ve enjoyed the courses and I’ve had great teammates and coaches.

BG: If your school was to offer a class it currently doesn’t, what would you want to see taught?

ZH: “I’d like to see more personal finance classes and business focused courses offered.”

BG: What are your plans for after high school, and what career are you headed toward?

ZH: “After graduation I will attend Wabash College. I plan to major in pre-health and minor in global health. I was accepted into the global health initiative program there so I will have opportunities to do health care work in Indiana and also travel to South America next fall. I will also be on the Wabash golf and swim teams.”

BG: Is it difficult to keep up with your school work being an athlete?

ZH: “It is definitely hard at times to keep up with school work and athletics, but I know this has been preparing me for college and later in life. So, I keep grinding.”

BG: Which particular classes and teachers have helped you the most in high school?

ZH: “I’ve had some really great teachers at GHS. Mr. Combs was great in Economics. Mr. Williams has been a great coach and mentor. I’ve really learned a lot from my English teachers Mr. Wheeler and Mrs. Perrin. They do a great job preparing us for college.”

BG: In the future, once you’ve established yourself, if you had your choice, would you want to live in the mountains, on the beach or in the neighborhood?

ZH: “Once I am established in my career I see myself on a beach for sure. I love the water and the sun.”

BG: Do you think high school has gone fast, and are you going to miss it?

ZH: “Freshman year was slow due to Covid and hybrid learning. Sophomore year through senior year has been a blur. I’ll definitely miss seeing my friends every day, but I have a lot to look forward to and I’m pretty excited about what God has next for me.”
