TERRE HAUTE — Three local athletes emerged from the Terre Haute North Boys’ Track Sectional as individual champions Thursday.

South Putnam took both throwing titles, with Ben Teipen winning the discus and Keenan Mowery-Shields taking shot put. Meanwhile, Greencastle distance runner Landon Miller won the 3,200 meters.

In the team competition, the Tiger Cubs emerged in fourth place with 61.75 points, followed by the Eagles in fifth with 45. North Putnam placed ninth with 23 points, while Cloverdale was 12th with 13.

Just like a week prior at the Western Indiana Conference Meet, the South Putnam throwers were dominant, with senior Teipen winning by nearly six feet with a throw of 150 feet, 6 inches, and Mowery-Shields besting the field by almost five feet with a throw of 51 feet, 1-inch.

Miller, a sophomore for the Tiger Cubs, was the only runner to break the 10-minute mark in the 3,200 with a time of 9:57.05.

Others advancing to the Bloomington North Regional for GHS included seniors Garret Cooper and Brendle Brennan. Cooper was one of two competitors to top the 6 feet mark in the high jump, but lost the championship on a judge’s decision to Jaylen Wells of Terre Haute South.

Brennan was third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.11.

Cooper is also part of the Tiger Cubs’ advancing 4x100 relay team, as he teamed with Clay Glessner, Ian Williamson and Bryceton Nunn to third in a time of 44.25.

For the Eagles, the other advancing athletes include Emilio Gallegos, Evan Hinkle, Gabe Feltner and Keaton Chew, who placed third in the 4x800 relay in 8:26.11.

After a junior season in which he finished 16th in the state in the long jump, North Putnam senior Nolan Hackleman is again advancing, finishing second with a leap of 20 feet, 5 inches

A pair of local athletes missed advancing to Bloomington by the thinnest of margins, not only finishing fourth but coming up on the short end of a judge’s decision in jumping events.

Cloverdale junior Harrison Tyler cleared 11 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault and finished fourth, just behind Chase Catlin of Sullivan. South Putnam sophomore high jumper Hayden Meredith suffered the same fate, clearing 5 feet, 10 inches but losing a decision to Josh Morgan of Terre Haute South.

Others scoring points for the Tiger Cubs included senior Charlie Menzel finishing fifth in the 1,600 and eighth in the 800. Miller added a sixth-place finish in the 1,600, while junior Anthony Adams (300 hurdles), freshman Cyrus Gurnon (pole vault) and junior Ian Williamson (long jump) all also finished sixth.

GHS senior Daniel Dinn was seventh in the 400, while junior Taygan McRoberts finished in a four-way tie for seventh in the high jump. Anthony Adams was eighth in the 110 hurdles.

The Greencastle 4x400 team of Dinn, Cayden Blodgett, Glessner and Menzel finished fourth, as did the 4x800 team of Menzel, Miller, Caleb Edwards and Dinn.

For the Eagles, sophomore Feltner added a sixth-place finish in the 800, while senior Chew (1,600), freshman Brody Burdge (300 hurdles) and sophomore Khalil Jefferson (long jump) all had seventh-place finishes, and junior Gus Monday was eighth in discus.

The 4x400 team of Jefferson, Burdge, Feltner and Chew finished fifth.

For the Cougars, senior Matthew Farrington was fourth in the long jump, and junior Jeremiah Miles was seventh in the 1,600.

The 4x400 team of Christian Karmer, Evan Polley, Farrington and Miles was seventh, as was the 4x800 team of Elija Harless, Kaleb Walton, Polly and Edrien Sobrion-Behler. The Cougar 4x100 team of Paxton O’Brein, Kramer, Wesley Murphy and Brody Kinkead placed eighth.

For Cloverdale, junior Connor Ramsey was just outside the advancing runners in the 400, finishing fourth. Meanwhile, senior Liam Ramsey was part of the four-way tie for seventh in the high jump.

The advancing athletes will be in action at the Bloomington North Regional beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.
