Tiger Cubs fall to Chargers, 8-2

The Greencastle baseball team hosted a 16-win North Montgomery team Monday night in non-conference action, getting set for the fast-approaching sectionals.The Chargers got to Tiger Cub pitching in the third inning, scoring six runs to go on to the 8-2 victory.

Dillon Hughes got the start and kept North Montgomery off balance until the third. A leadoff walk and a throwing error set up the Chargers.Corbin Meadows was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Three consecutive singles and a two-run double blew the game open, as the Chargers jumped out to a 6-0 lead.

Greencastle had some chances early. In the first, the Tiger Cubs had their own three-hit inning, but could not plate a run.

They got back into the game in the third. Sam Gooch was hit by a pitch after an Owen Huff single. Nathan Sutherlin brought home both runners with a two-RBI single.

GHS threatened again in the fourth, having runners on second and third with a double by Hughes down the right field line. Relief pitcher Roman Utterback retired the next three to end the threat.

The Chargers tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Gage Edwards singled and stole second and later scored on a Meadows sacrifice fly. They picked up one more in the seventh. Utterback singled and advanced to third on a throwing error. He later scored on a wild pitch.

Reliever Cade Cole came in the finish off the game, retiring the Cubs in order in the seventh to lock up the Chargers’ 17th win of the season.

Gooch, Sutherlin and Ashton Dayhuff each had two hits on the night to lead the Greencastle attack. Hughes took the loss.

The Tiger Cubs have one more home game Tuesday night as they host Riverton Parke before sectional play on Monday.
