Kind words are like honey, sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. Proverbs. 16:24

Mankind has been enjoying this sweet natural product made by bees since creation. Raw honey is valued for its medicinal uses as well as its delicious flavor.

Drinking tea with honey for a sore throat is a familiar remedy. But you may be surprised by the many benefits outlined by current research. These benefits are specific for “raw” honey that has not been pasteurized. The high heat of that process can destroy the nutrients.

The following highlights from an online article by “Healthline” list eight benefits for our health in addition to a safety risk for babies that everyone should learn.

8 Raw Honey Benefits for Health

1. A good source of antioxidants – Research shows that antioxidant compounds in raw honey called polyphenols have anti-inflammatory effects that could be beneficial in protecting against a number of conditions associated with oxidative stress.

2. Raw honey nutrition – One tablespoon of raw honey contains 64 calories and 17 grams of sugar. Raw honey is a source of amino acids, enzymes and micronutrients such as calcium, magnesium, manganese, niacin, pantothenic acid, phosphorous, potassium riboflavin and zinc.

3. Antibacterial and antifungal properties – Research has shown that the propolis in raw honey has antifungal and antibacterial properties. The potential for both internal and topical treatments using raw honey is significant.

4. Heals wounds – A 2018 review of studies found that honey has antimicrobial properties.

5. Phytonutrient powerhouse – The phytonutrients in honey are responsible for its antioxidant properties, as well as its antibacterial and antifungal power. They’re also thought to be the reason raw honey has shown immune-boosting and anticancer benefits. Heavy processing in regular honey can destroy these valuable nutrients.

6. Help for digestive issues – It also contains beneficial prebiotics, meaning it nourishes the good bacteria that live in the intestines, which are crucial not only for digestion but overall health.

7. Soothe a sore throat and cough – Honey is an old sore throat remedy that soothes the ache and can help with coughs. Add it to hot tea with lemon when a cold virus hits.

8. Brain benefits – The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects can benefit many parts of the body, including brain health.

Are there any risks?

In addition to beneficial prebiotics and nutrients, raw honey can also carry harmful bacteria such as Clostridium botulinum. This is particularly dangerous for babies. The Centers for Disease control and Prevention advise that honey should never be given to an infant younger than a year old.

Adding these amazing health benefits into your daily routine is easy to do.

My favorite ways to use raw honey:

• Drizzle on yogurt or oatmeal.

• Add to a blender smoothie recipe.

• Stir into homemade salad dressing.

• Stir into no-bake recipes, like cookies, protein bars or chia pudding.

Shop for raw honey at your farmer’s market to support local producers. It can also be found in grocery stores and health food stores. Check labels to be certain that you are purchasing “raw” honey, unpasteurized, without added ingredients.

Honey is easy to store, does not need refrigeration, and does not expire. If you notice that your honey is starting to look grainy, place your jar in a pan of warm water to melt the crystals. But remember that higher temperatures can cook the honey which removes the raw properties.

Enjoying raw honey is sweet for the soul and healthy for the body.
