Man dies after being shot at Camby Walmart

CAMBY — An Indianapolis man has died as the result of of a shooting in the parking lot of the Camby Walmart.

The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday morning that the victim, identified as 34-year-old Matthew Steele, has died.

At 1:44 p.m. Sunday, sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a person shot at the store located at 8191 Upland Way.

Deputies arrived on scene at 1:53 p.m. to find a man, now identified as Steele, wounded near a vehicle with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his torso. He was provided immediate medical attention and transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

Deputies also located a male person of interest at the scene. He was detained as of Sunday afternoon.

Preliminary reports indicate that there was some type of verbal and physical altercation between the men prior to any shots being fired. Investigators believe all these events happened outside the store in the parking lot.

Hendricks County detectives and the Hendricks County Coroner’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.
