Donald Ray Short

Donald Ray Short, 85, Greencastle, went to be with our Lord on the late morning of Friday, July 5, 2024.

Don was born Jan. 20, 1939 in Evansville to the late Alva Olen Short and Hilda (Wagner) Montgomery.

Don attended and graduated from Evansville Central High School.

He spent his career in the steel industry and was the proud and successful owner of D.R. Short Steel Company Inc.

Don was a loving husband, father and a dear friend to everyone he met. Don loved spending his time in his workshop, building anything and everything anyone would ask for. He referred to his home that he built with his wife, JoAnn, as “paradise.” He was the best handyman and could fix anything.

He will be remembered best for his loving heart, his patience, his remarkable way of making it known how much he loved and how proud he was of his family, his jokes and his kindness.

Don is survived by his beloved wife, whom he was married to for 42 years, Jo Ann (Sehr) Short; his children, Candy (Bob) Seamon, Jill (Mark Hubele) Bodart and Ja’Nean (Scott) Rau; his grandchildren, Stephanie Breslan, Dustin Van Dyke, Kylee Surface-Seamon, Jenna Williams, Grace Rau, Hannah Rau and Lily Rau; as well as his great-grandchildren, Mia Surface, Aidan Breslan, Anna Breslan, Lincoln Van Dyke and Luke Hogg; and sisters-in-law Velma Jay and Jayne Smiley.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in passing by his children, Katrina Lynn Short and Thomas Ray Short; and his siblings, Richard Short and Betty Lou Baize.

A celebration of life will be announced by the family at a later date.
