FILLMORE — In a three-department effort, firefighters tackled an attic fire at a home in Fillmore late Saturday evening.

At about 10 p.m., a box alarm went out for a structure fire at 6 Putnam St. The Fillmore Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the home as the homeowner was attempting to douse the fire.

After personnel from the Greencastle Fire Department and the Floyd Township Volunteer Fire Department arrived, a nearby hydrant was connected and a handline was fed through the front door. The ceiling around a light fixture was then pulled to get at the fire.

The fire was controlled about 20 minutes after Fillmore Fire’s arrival.

Apart from the attic’s damage, the smoke was effectively contained to the back room. The home was ventilated as the response wrapped up.

“It wasn’t bad getting in there,” Fillmore Fire Asst. Chief Dan Heavin said about maneuvering inside the home. “Nothing that we couldn’t get around, get through, to get to the fire.”

Heavin provided that remodeling was taking place. There were materials as such inside the home.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and Putnam County EMS were also at the scene, while Duke Energy arrived to cut power to the home. The American Red Cross was also contacted.

Heavin stated that the fire’s cause was determined to be an overload on the light fixture in question.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

The home was not considered a total loss. However, apart from water and smoke damage, Heavin said there were electrical issues that needed to be addressed.

According to Putnam County GIS, the home is listed to Robert Hagan.
