Evelyn M. Zeis, 94, of Mooresville, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2024 at Miller’s Senior Living.

She is survived by her daughter, Beth Ann Goodman; her stepdaughters, Darla Dawn Zeis and Beth Anne; and her dear sister-in-law, Sarah Nevins; plus several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Clinton Nevins and Josephine Maurine (Clodfelter) Nevins; her husband, James F. Zeis, whom she was married to for almost 50 years; her daughter, Laura Lynn Briggs; her son, Matthew Clinton Briggs; her brother, Art Nevins; and her son-in-law, Gary Goodman.

After graduating from Danville, Ill., High School, Evelyn married and raised three children. When she moved to Greencastle, she became a telephone operator. Later she worked for 15 years as a dental chair assistant. She was also a devoted Sunday school teacher at First Christian Church in Greencastle for many years.

In 1968, Evelyn married Jim Zeis and increased her family with two stepdaughters.

Evelyn not only became an accomplished pianist but was also very talented at sewing and crafts and she and her husband were passionate about collecting antiques. Evelyn took advantage of every opportunity to learn and promote the arts. She became an active member of the County Extension Women’s Club in Greencastle.

As an avid gardener, Evelyn loved the outdoors, birding and camping and observing all things beautiful. She served as a secretary for the Department of Natural Resources in the Forestry Division for 30 years and will be missed by her former boss and friend, Allen Royer, who always called her “Mom.”

She loved life and will best be remembered for her sense of humor, her laughter, her huge smile and positive personality.

Final care and cremation arrangements were entrusted to Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home in Greencastle. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.
