The Greencastle Summer Music Festival continues at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Gobin Church with a celebration of the music of local musical creators who have become a central part of our community.

As always, there’s no admission charge for the performance, as pianist/composer Cathie Malach and Him&Her (Tosh and Joel Everson) present “Soul Tapestry,” an evening of original songs and improvisation woven together to soothe and engage your senses. Joining Malach and the Eversons will be an array of other local performers.

“One of the things that is so special to me is that we really are committed to our motto of ‘friends making music for friends,’” says Eric Edberg, who founded the GSMF in 2005 and continues as its artistic and executive director.

“This week’s program exemplifies that spirit. Joel and Tosh are a married couple and are good friends as well as musical collaborators with Cathie. Each of them are a central part of the community, not just as musical artists but as business people (the Eversons run The Whisk on Jackson Street), spiritual leaders (Joel is a pastor at Gobin and Tosh a frequent part of the worship band), and healers (Cathie is, among other things, a sought-after massage therapist.) All three of them are real-life friends with so many in our core audience. I’m often amazed by the musical talent, in so many genres, here in Putnam County. And if ever there was a musical event of ‘friends making music for friends,’ this is it.”

GSMF programs are offered without an admission charge. The festival is self-funded by pay-what-you-can “love offerings” at performances, individual donors, an endowment (funded by GSMF audience members, including a major gift from the late Ellie Ypma) at the Putnam County Community Foundation, and local business sponsors The Inn at DePauw, the Doc’s Inn, First National Bank, North Salem State Bank, Old National Bank, Tri-County Bank and Trust and Keystone Cooperative, the GSMF’s most recent sponsor.

Malach has performed in concert venues, clubs, recording studios and transformative workshop settings, thriving in diverse musical genres, from new age to rock to folk. She composed, arranged and recorded albums with poet and lyricist Kim Rosen (including “Delphys: Ocean Born and Naked Waters,” on which she sang lead vocals); composed and recorded scores for short film; and collaborated with such artists as Peter Kater, Chris White, Paul McCandless, Eric Edberg, Larry Thompson, Amy Fradon, Leslie Ritter and David Darling. Her recent debut album, “HeartLand,” brings all her experience together.

Joel and Tosh Everson are from Greencastle. They formed the band War Radio and perform as the acoustic duo Him&Her. Over the last 15 years they have recorded numerous albums and enjoyed the opportunity to tour extensively, both internationally and across the country. Their style is a mix of influences ranging from jam band to folk. They believe music is transformative, evidenced in their performance and passion.

The 2024 GSMF season continues for the next two Wednesdays. On Aug. 7, Percussion Group DePauw with I-Jen Fang and the season finale on Aug. 14 with the Tad Robinson Band.
