DePauw University, in partnership with the City of Greencastle, has announced a $32 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its College and Community Collaboration (CCC) initiative.

The grant will support joint development projects that will enhance the quality of life for city residents and foster a vibrant, inclusive community.

Recognizing that colleges and universities often serve as anchors of their communities and play a crucial role in their vitality, Lilly Endowment launched the CCC initiative in 2023 to support collaboration between institutions and diverse stakeholders for the benefit of local residents, businesses, faculty, staff and students. The significant grant will partially fund "Growing Green and Gold Together," a community development project that will shape the next chapter for downtown Greencastle.

“We believe DePauw has a responsibility to both our students and to our greater community,” said President Lori S. White. “Any investment in the future of DePauw is an investment in the future of Greencastle, and vice versa; we thrive and flourish together. Lilly Endowment’s commitment to education in Indiana and the grant to DePauw is critical to our collaborative efforts to enhance the city of Greencastle for the benefit of our neighbors, students and employees.”

The "Growing Green and Gold Together" project will significantly boost local businesses in downtown Greencastle. The development of new residential units and public spaces will increase foot traffic and economic activity in the area, benefiting existing businesses and attracting new entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, the Downtown Small Business Incubator Fund will directly support the growth and success of small businesses, fostering growth in the thriving local economy. The addition of amenities, such as an indoor aquatics facility, will enhance the quality of life for Greencastle and Putnam County residents.

“While varied in scope and reach, the proposed initiatives and projects reflect a commitment by stakeholders, inclusive of faculty, staff and students from these institutions, business leaders, government officials, and community leaders, to create vibrant communities where all residents can thrive,” said Jennett M. Hill, president of the Endowment. “The Endowment looks forward to seeing all the projects in the CCC initiative evolve. We are enthusiastic about the prospects for both the institutions and communities and are eager to see these institutions and their community stakeholders collaborate to breathe life into their promising projects.”

"Growing Green and Gold Together" is a comprehensive project designed to address critical community needs through four key components:

• Seminary Square Mixed-Use Development: This project will transform two city blocks into a mixed-use development featuring new residential units, commercial space and parking. The development will offer a range of housing options to serve existing community members, while helping to attract and retain young professionals and families. By prioritizing communal green spaces and pedestrian-friendly streets, the area will reflect a more human-centric infrastructure that empowers spontaneous social connection.

• Downtown Public Space Enhancement: This component focuses on revitalizing public spaces that facilitate major community events in and around Courthouse Square, the iconic center of downtown Greencastle. With the addition of new streetscapes, public spaces and a parking garage to support community activities and local businesses, these improvements make the area more conducive to events and gatherings as well as increasing its accessibility via pedestrian traffic from the campus of DePauw University.

• Downtown Small Business Incubator Fund: Aimed at fostering local entrepreneurship, this fund will provide support for small business development and growth, contributing to the economic vitality of downtown Greencastle. As a partnership between Main Street Greencastle, the Greencastle/Putnam County Development Center and DePauw’s School of Business and Leadership, this endeavor will open doors for training and support on topics such as developing a business plan, small business finance and effective marketing, in addition to providing financial resources to current and future small business owners.

• Putnam County YMCA and Natatorium: This project will assist in the establishment of a state-of-the-art YMCA facility with a natatorium, providing year-round aquatic access for recreation, exercise, therapy and community gatherings. The facility will cater to the needs of seniors, families and residents with disabilities, promoting health and well-being across the community. The proposed natatorium will likely incorporate features such as a zero-entry ramp, therapeutic benches, a flat area for aqua aerobics, swim lanes and an area for young children.

The total cost to fund the "Growing Green and Gold Together" project is estimated to be more than $109 million. In addition to the Lilly Endowment grant, funding will come through a combination of developer investments, private donations and public support from the City of Greencastle.

Dr. Andrea Young, vice president for finance and administration at DePauw University and grant co-principal investigator, stated: "We are incredibly grateful to Lilly Endowment for their generous support. This grant will enable us to make transformative changes in our community, promoting the welfare and well-being of all residents.”

Dr. Dionne Jackson, vice president for institutional equity at DePauw University and grant co-principal investigator, added: “This opportunity enables DePauw and the Greencastle community to foster a vibrant and inclusive environment. We look forward to working closely with our community partners to bring these projects to fruition. For 187 years, the City of Greencastle and DePauw University have partnered. This opportunity is yet another example of what we can accomplish together."

“Growing Green and Gold Together” builds upon DePauw's strong partnerships with the City of Greencastle and local organizations. Over the years, these collaborations have fostered a sense of community and enabled impactful projects that have benefited residents and students alike. By leveraging these well-established relationships and bringing in new partners like the YMCA of Wabash Valley, the project ensures a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of the Greencastle community.

The project will be overseen by an executive leadership team comprising representatives from DePauw and the City of Greencastle. The team will ensure effective communication and collaboration with community stakeholders throughout the project’s implementation.

Mayor Lynda Dunbar of Greencastle added: "This partnership with DePauw University and the support from Lilly Endowment will have a lasting impact on the vitality of our community. The planned developments will not only improve our infrastructure and public spaces but also strengthen our community bonds and support local businesses."

The $32 million to DePauw is the largest of 13 grants to Indiana colleges and universities in the second round of CCC funding. Totaling more than $300 million, the latest round of grantees also includes:

• Butler University, Indianapolis – $22.5 million;

• Calumet College of St. Joseph, Whiting – $15 million;

• Grace College, Winona Lake – $27 million;

• Hanover College, Hanover – $30 million;

• Indiana Institute of Technology, Fort Wayne – $21 million;

• Indiana University, Bloomington – $16 million;

• Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion – $24.3 million;

• Manchester University, North Manchester – $12.1 million;

• Marian University, Indianapolis – $25 million;

• Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, – $30.5 million;

• Trine University, Angola – $17.2 million;

• University of Notre Dame, South Bend – $30 million.

  • This is great news! Our community will really benefit from a pool that is accessible to the public, not just DePauw students and employees, and that is geared for all ages, not primarily for student athletes.

    -- Posted by ericedberg on Sat, Aug 3, 2024, at 10:19 AM
  • Thank you DePauw! Please make sure there is a big sign at the pool entrance saying that it was paid for by DePauw! And another sign that says NO DEPAUW HATERS ALLOWED

  • Thank you DePauw and thank you Lilly Foundation!!!!

  • Raker - Depauw is playing a big role securing the grant, but it is funded from Lilly Endowment.

    -- Posted by MM1927 on Sun, Aug 4, 2024, at 7:59 AM
  • No, DePauw deserves all the credit for getting the grant, and for the idea to use it for the YMCA pool!

    Maybe somewhere on the sign (in tiny font) it could say it's funded by a grant from Lilly, but the grant program is ultimately for colleges to improve the community they are located in, which will help them to attract and retain faculty, staff and students. This is according to the website link in the article. Without DePauw it would never be happening!

    Don't forget that the money Lilly so generously gives away here was earned from price gouging everyone on medications, so I wouldn't be so fast to be sing their praises. The insane prices they charge have cost countless lives, along with financial hardship.

    RIP Ashley Square and Marvin’s.

  • The new apartments? Is this a community thing or will they cost $2-3 thousand/month that only DPU people can afford?

    -- Posted by ValHalla84 on Mon, Aug 5, 2024, at 1:47 PM
  • Mayor Humdinger- I missed that on my first read- Ashley Square has been a hidden Gem for Greencastle-- good family entertainment -- I doubt Greencastle will get another movie theater.

    -- Posted by MM1927 on Mon, Aug 5, 2024, at 3:15 PM
  • @Mayor Humdinger: I don't think Marvin's is going anywhere, if anything it'll be busier than ever with all those people in walking distance of GCBs!

    @ValHalla84: For the record, "DPU people" don't all make crazy amounts of money.

    I really hope we get a new theatre!

  • “Inclusive” of whom? In my experience, that word isn’t used as its definition would suggest.

    -- Posted by techphcy on Tue, Aug 6, 2024, at 9:03 AM
  • Will Townies be allowed to live there and use those spaces?

    -- Posted by Youseriousclark? on Tue, Aug 6, 2024, at 3:28 PM
  • This is fantastic news for our community. This will keep our community moving forward. Don’t let the DePauw haters try to tell you otherwise.

    -- Posted by Koios on Tue, Aug 6, 2024, at 8:07 PM
  • So let me get this straight: DePauw is getting into the rental business, 3 parking lots will be removed for this build when parking is already an issue, and the theater is supposedly going to be relocated downtown. What a joke!

    -- Posted by Homegrown765 on Tue, Aug 6, 2024, at 9:53 PM
  • So, $32 million wont come anywhere close to putting the pool in and all these other projects is Depauw investing a couple hundred million of there own money?

    Price gouging? Financial hardships? COUNTLESS LIVES LOST? Is this true? I'm not calling RAKER another DePauw hater, but if he is correct, it could be that the devil is hiding in the details.

    Homegrown765, the plan is to add parking under the structure. Also, having 130+ new people downtown will be a shot in the arm for our downtown businesses. Also, the last plan I saw stated that they would not be owned by DePauw. So DePauw would not be in the rental business.

    illudo illusi illusum, yes more money will be needed and raised through a combination of partnerships.

    The primary thing we all need to focus on is where the additional $80,000,000 in funding comes from. The awarded grant only covers 30% of this proposal. This is like winning $5 on a scratch off lottery ticket and trying to buy a new car with the windfall.

  • A quote from the BANNER article; "Dr. Andrea Young, vice president for finance and administration at DePauw University and grant co-principal investigator, stated: "We are incredibly grateful to Lilly Endowment for their generous support. Really? ALL RESIDENTS? Not just the downtowners? I wouldn't bet on it. When this boondoggle is over, the forgotten folks I sometimes see in their motorized wheelchairs driving down the shoulder of 231 near Casey's, dodging traffic, still won't have a sidewalk.

  • 130+ New voting residents, mostly Depauw folks...hmm...wonder how they'll vote...can't wait!

    -- Posted by Youseriousclark? on Wed, Aug 7, 2024, at 6:21 PM
  • All this negative talk about DePauw is ridiculous. I grew up in this town. Many of our activities growing up revolved around DePauw in the late 40’s - early 50’s. DePauw has helped Greencastle for years. So all of you that are down on DePauw keep your thoughts to yourself and appreciate all they have done for our community.

  • I would imagine they, or anyone for that matter, would vote for whomever they thought was the best candidate. I’m not sure why you would be concerned about that. That is what happens in a democracy.

    -- Posted by Koios on Wed, Aug 7, 2024, at 7:44 PM
  • Koios,

    I agree on this happens in a representative democracy. That is a very good thing. I would challenge one part- I believe most people only vote for a party and spend little time on considering who might be the best candidate. I find that with friends on both sides of the aisle and, will admit, frustrates me to no end. I usually attempt to show this thru questions. When they realize it, most common comment is, "I don't care, I have always voted this way!"

    Nit- so when someone has a differing opinion, they should not be able to voice it?

    Interesting though we have seen 2 instances where voters were attempted to be silenced. One failed (1/6). The other did not (silencing the democratic primary voters).

    -- Posted by beg on Wed, Aug 7, 2024, at 10:55 PM
  • Beg, your attempt to compare the events of January 6 with Biden voluntarily removing himself from running is quite revealing. It appears it would be wise for you to ask yourself those same questions you said that you ask your friends.

  • Will this close Vine St. to traffic?

    Even the village idiot understands that J6 wasn't about silencing voters (especially if you paid any attention to the evidence that's been brought to light about the fraud that infests our election system), and Biden's "honorable" quest to take one for the team as he "voluntarily" removes himself from the running of a second presidential term absolutely disenfranchises those who voted for him instead of Kamala.

    -- Posted by DouglasQuaid on Thu, Aug 8, 2024, at 10:41 AM
  • Looks like there are cars on vine st in the illustration, but we all know DePauw loves closing streets so who knows.

  • “Even the village idiot understands that J6 wasn't about silencing voters”

    LOL, trying to prevent the certification of an election by the US Congress is about silencing voters, any rational being would come to no other conclusion.

    -- Posted by Koios on Thu, Aug 8, 2024, at 6:48 PM
  • Maybe they would donate some of that money to get the streets fixed.

    "LOL, trying to prevent the certification of an election by the US Congress is about silencing voters, any rational being would come to no other conclusion."

    It could be *conflated* into that if no grounds to refuse the slates existed with no executive rights to allow its refusal, neither of which were true at the time.

    Thing is, what silences voters more? Trump egging Pence to refuse the slates due to legitimate rationale but still leaving the White House on his own volition while under justifiable protest, or Biden exiting 2024's election run AFTER being elected and leaving his constituents with Kamala, whom nobody voted for?

    -- Posted by DouglasQuaid on Fri, Aug 9, 2024, at 10:32 PM
  • Koios,

    Not a comparison between the two. Just 2 events that can be defined in that way. No different than 2 accidents- one severe and one not- both are still an accident.

    -- Posted by beg on Fri, Aug 9, 2024, at 11:01 PM

  • Here’s your guy. Absolutely losing it.

    Has anyone noticed that Kamala CHEATED at the airport? There was nobody at the plane, and she ‘A.I.’d’ it, and showed a massive ‘crowd’ of so-called followers, BUT THEY DIDN’T EXIST!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “She was turned in by a maintenance worker at the airport when he noticed the fake crowd picture, but there was nobody there, later confirmed by the reflection of the mirror like finish on the Vice Presidential Plane.”

    “She’s a CHEATER. She had NOBODY waiting, and the ‘crowd’ looked like 10,000 people! Same thing is happening with her fake ‘crowds’ at her speeches,” Trump added. “She should be disqualified because the creation of a fake image is ELECTION INTERFERENCE.

    Developer investments? What does that mean?

  • BEG, I'm surprised that you would write such a thing, especially as it appears we have a similar background and common interests.

    As I see it, from a heightened advantage of advanced years, there is a huge difference between being stupid and crazy. If you are determinedly stupid, there is simply no excuse, but as is often the case, crazy people are rarely stupid, and when the rock hits the bottom, there is always the entertainment value. In addition, my investment dollars play well with crazy, from an agriculture point of view.

    -- Posted by Prince of Stardust Hills on Mon, Aug 12, 2024, at 8:21 AM
  • The fact that you take into consideration “entertainment value” when deciding who you will vote for pretty much sums up part of what is wrong with our country currently.

    You are not voting for class clown, you are voting for President.
