Robbery, shooting suspects change pleas

Thursday, August 8, 2024

EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this story lacked up-to-date information on Jon McGuff's robbery case in Putnam County.

With one defendant in a February robbery and shooting cause already having changes his plea, the second is set to do the same.

Jon McGuff

On Thursday, Aug. 1, Jon L. McGuff, 26, Reelsville, entered a guilty plea to most serious of the five charges he was facing — Level 2 felony burglary with a deadly weapon.

The other charges in the case — Level 3 felony aggravated battery, Level 3 felony robbery resulting in bodily injury, Level 5 felony criminal recklessness and Level 6 felony auto theft — were all dismissed.

McGuff will appear before Putnam Circuit Court Judge Matthew Headley on Thursday, Sept. 12 for sentencing. McGuff is represented by defense attorney Trudy Selvia, while Chief Deputy Prosecutor Austin Malayer represents the State of Indiana.

Skyler Pintor

Meanwhile, co-defendant Skyler H. Pintor, 31, Fillmore, was in Putnam Circuit Court Thursday for what was supposed to be a pretrial conference.

Instead, defense attorney Todd Meyer informed Judge Headley that the defense and prosecution had been discussing a change of plea.

Malayer indicated the same. It will be a written plea, but prior to the Sept. 19 hearing, the probation department will perform a pre-sentence investigation.

Pintor is charged with four of the five counts McGuff had faced, minus the aggravated battery charge.

The two men are accused of forcing their way into a Judson Court apartment and getting into a physical altercation with Carlie Capps III. During the incident, shots were fired, one of which passed from Capps’ left clavicle area, through his neck and out the right side of his neck.

The alleged crime happened while McGuff was awaiting trial in Clay County for the May 2023 murder of William Matherly. In that case, McGuff is set for an Aug. 21 change of plea hearing in Clay Superior Court, where he will plead guilty to manslaughter.
