Despite rebranding in both name and logo, Hometown Dental remains in the hands of Dr. Dennis Knuth, who founded the practice 15 years ago, and Dr. Tess Funke, who has been with Hometown for five years.

Small town and modern.

It can be like pulling teeth to get these two ideas to work together, yet that’s the goal for Hometown Dental as it celebrates 15 years in business.

Long known as Greencastle Hometown Dental, the practice, established in 2009 by Dr. Dennis Knuth, is now Hometown Dental.Co.

It’s a change meant to reflect that, while located in Greencastle, the practice is not simply there to serve people in Greencastle, but Dr. Knuth and Dr. Tess Funke can be their “hometown” dentists if they live in Reelsville, Bainbridge, Cloverdale, Russellville, Spencer or anywhere else.

“Treat every patient as if they are a family member,” Knuth said. “That’s part of the Hometown feel. We’ve added people, but there are people who have been here for 15 years.”

For example, he noted the blessing he’s had of doing braces for three different generations of the same family.

Additionally, Knuth and Funke say they do all they can to tailor care to individual patients, such as bringing in those who might be nervous about dental work at off-peak times when things are quieter and lights can be lower.

“I regularly hear people say, ‘I used to hate going to the dentist,’” Funke said.

Meanwhile, the changed logo – it’s plainly visible on the sign out in front of the 1113 Indianapolis Rd. practice – is also meant to reflect something modern and forward-looking. Designed by Taulbee Jackson, the logo is something that the dentists and their staff hope reflects the modern technology utilized inside the building.

“Talking with our patients, when the come in, they’re surprised at the technology we have,” Director of Business Operations Joel Everson said. “We want to logo to reflect that experience.”

The idea is to provide the best technology possible so that, perhaps people don’t believe they have to drive to Indianapolis to get that level of care.

Paradoxically, this can give the small-town experience of “and old-school doctor who does it all.”

Additionally, a tooth-shaped “H” on the logo reflects a combination of modern design and perhaps a bit of small-town whimsy.

“It makes you smile, and we’re in the business of making people smile,” Everson said.

“We make people smile daily,” Funke added.

In celebration of 15 years of service, Hometown Dental is preparing to give back to the community on Friday, Sept. 13.

The day will feature Free Dental Friday, which the practice has been doing for more than 10 years now.

Hometown Dental will also partner with Heather Taylor State Farm, which is right next door at 1111 Indianapolis Rd., on free food trucks in the insurance agency parking lot.

More information on both parts of the Sept. 13 events will be provided later.

“It seems appropriate to take a second to say thank you,” Knuth said.
