CAMBY — Hendricks County authorities have found evidence of self defense in a shooting that resulted in an Indianapolis man’s death.

The 19-year-old man who was initially detained for questioning in the death of 34-year-old Matthew Steele will not be charged with a crime.

On the afternoon of June 2, Hendricks County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the call of a person shot at the Walmart store at 8191 Upland Way in Camby.

Deputies arrived on scene to find one man, identified as Steele, was wounded near a vehicle with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his torso.

Steele was provided immediate medical attention and transported to an Indianapolis hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Preliminary reports indicated that there was a verbal and physical altercation between the two men prior to a firearm being produced and fired.

After a thorough investigation, there was evidence of self-defense found in this case, and the prosecutor has declined criminal charges in this matter.
