The Bodega cuts ribbon on South Jackson Street location

With a crowd of employees, well wishers and local officials gathered round, proprietor Tosh Everson cuts the ribbon on The Bodega at 16 S. Jackson St. as husband Joel and chef Kate Kissel cheer. Offering fresh, local and hard-to-find items, the Bodega is open six days a week.

Envisioned as a “New York-inspired, Greencastle-crafted market concept,” The Bodega opened its doors with a ribbon cutting and a packed house on Saturday, Aug. 10.

Located upstairs from Joel and Tosh Everson’s restaurant and bourbon bar The Whisk, The Bodega is another venture by the Eversons, who own the building at 16 S. Jackson St.

“Today marks a year and nine months since we opened The Whisk, so we may be a little crazy to start on something else,” Tosh said prior to cutting the ribbon.

Inspired by neighborhood markets of larger cities like New York (or perhaps yesteryear Greencastle) The Bodega strives to be an outlet for fresh, local ingredients – particularly produce – as well as breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads and specialty items.

“The Bodega is something that we feel is little pieces of things that we like or that are missing from Greencastle that we thought we could share and bring to everyone,” Tosh said. “Really intentional and passionate food, lots of really quality goods in there.”

Joel credited Kate Kissel, who has already partnered with The Whisk on its offerings, for the quality The Bodega has to offer.

“This is really not possible without chef Kate Kissell,” Joel said. “She’s passionate about fresh and local and really, really, really good tasting. Fresh, local and delicious can happen at the same time.”

Kissel, who spent a number of years in Los Angeles, looks at The Bodega as a tribute to the community by a group of Greencastle natives.

“This market -- I look at it as our love letter to our town and community,” Kissel said, adding that keeping suppliers local keeps money in the community. “Your purchasing power is going to the community around you.”

Not only was the store packed for opening day, but as of midweek, had sold out of sandwiches each day.

The Bodega is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information, call 653-6060 or find it on Facebook at “The Bodega Greencastle.”

  • This is such a good thing for our town! Right on The Bodega and right on the Eversons. We stopped in and got great soup, salad, coffee items. All were superb.
