The following is the second of an eight-part series on the artists who will be painting the seven murals throughout Putnam County as part of the Putnam County Mural Festival. Set for Sept. 7-21, the festival will culminate with a celebration in Greencastle on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Up next is Colombian artist Angie Jerez.

Angie Jerez is from Bogota, Colombia, and has a background in graphic design. Shortly after she moved to Atlanta in 2012, she transitioned from digital work to drawing and mural painting, exploring her identity through layering stylized natural forms through graphic elements and color. She will be installing a mural at the Russellville Community Center in just a few weeks.

Q: Why did you want to create a mural in Putnam County?

A: It’s very attractive for me to explore and expand my practice in new places, and I’ve never painted in Indiana before. I’m excited because it will be more of an exchange of experiences, leaving my work and voice in a new place and bringing back home new memories and learning.

Q: What excites you about the specific location of your mural?

A: I like that it is in a secluded area, where there isn’t probably a lot of public art around, and also that my artwork will be on a space where the community gets together, a public space open for everyone to enjoy.

Q: How do you hope people will engage with your art?

A: When art contrasts the urban space I hope it will make spectators think about memories or something related to their daily lives, stories or questioning why it gets their attention.

Q: How did you get into mural creation? How long have you been doing it?

A: My first mural was around 2017, and it got my attention to challenge myself to create art in larger scale and different surfaces

Q: What inspires your art?

A: Stories, nostalgia, nature details and this place we call home

Q: What’s your next project?

A: An art retreat where I’ll try to explore real nature as a background.
