James Steven Akins

James Steven Akins, 68, of Greencastle, passed away on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Born Sept. 9, 1955 in Greencastle, the son of James A. Akins and Elinor (Irwin) Buis. He was a 1973 graduate of Greencastle High School.

Steve was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force.

He had retired from the Putnamville Correctional Facility. He was a member of the American Legion and Long Branch Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Steve is survived by his wife, Anita (Klebusch) Akins; son John (wife Kim) York; siblings Karen (husband Larry “Steve”) Sheldon, Ruth (husband Jon) Myers, Cheryl (husband Stephen) Robertson, Richard “Arlie” Mitchell (Misti) and Tony (wife Melissa) Mitchell; grandchildren Mike (wife Katie) York, Matt (wife Serrina) York, Jaylen York, Jarrett York, Nick (wife Sarah) Long and Emily Long (Dalton Beasley); five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow at the Brick Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. Friday until time of service at the funeral home.
