Clovers keep rolling, ground Eagles for first WIC win

Friday, September 6, 2024

The Cloverdale Clovers continued their winning ways with a dominating performance at home against Western Indiana Conference foe Brown County Friday night.

The Clovers piled up 432 yards of offense and started the running clock early in the third quarter in a 42-6 victory.

Landon Duncan threw five touchdown passes on an efficient 11-of-15 night, while Levi Johnson racked up 136 yards rushing to complement the air game.

Tayt Jackson showed off his versatility with three catches and five rushes for a total of 214 yards. The win improved the Clovers to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in WIC play. Brown County lost their first contest to drop to 2-1 and 1-1 in the conference.

“We are much improved from last year. That much is obvious. There are still a lot of things to work on. Our goal is to compete for a sectional title,” Cloverdale head coach Tyler Lotz said.

The Clovers took the opening kickoff and drove down the field on the legs of Johnson but scored on a Duncan to Jace Gardner five-yard pass. The drive took just 2:49 off the clock and five plays for a 6-0 lead.

The defense made a stop with a big sack and the Clover offense responded with a 90-yard drive. The Clovers moved the ball to the 46-yard line before Duncan hit Jackson in stride for a 54-yard touchdown pass that increased the lead to 13-0 still in the first quarter.

The teams traded punts and the Clovers got the ball back at midfield with just over three minutes left. A long pass to Jackson and another to Johnson set up Johnson for a three-yard touchdown run.

The Clovers converted the two-point conversion as the snap on the kick attempt was bobbled, but Artrevion Henderson took off and raced to the end zone to boost the score to 21-0.

“Our offensive line dominated this game. They were opening holes and when Levi gets going, he is hard to stop,” Lotz said.

Cloverdale forced a quick three-and-out with a big sack by Carson Caulkins. Jackson raced 49 yards to the Eagle three-yard line on the first play from scrimmage before Gardner caught his second scoring pass of the night from three yards away for a 28-0 halftime lead.

The Clovers forced Brown County to punt on the first possession of the second half. Cloverdale partially blocked the punt for decent field position at its own 35-yard line.

On the second play after the block, Duncan hit Jackson in stride down the right sideline for a 58-yard touchdown and the fourth of his five touchdown passes. Cloverdale led 35-0 and started the running clock.

“Landon did a great job. We were pretty good offensively, but we can still improve,” Lotz said of his explosive group.

Brown County finally put together a drive on its next possession and was able to move 56 yards to get on the board on a Noah Lewis to Kody Shugars 12-yard scoring toss to cut the lead to 35-6.

The Clovers fumbled the ensuing kickoff but forced an Eagle fumble on the second play and took over at their own 15-yard line. Johnson powered his way through Brown County’s defense to set up a Duncan to Drake Hoffa touchdown pass to close out the scoring and set the final margin at 42-6.

Hoffa had an interception in addition to his touchdown reception. The Clover defense limited the Eagles to just 161 yards of total offense as they dominated the line of scrimmage on that side of the ball also.

“Drake doesn’t say much, but he just comes to work every day,” Lotz said.

The Clovers hope to continue their winning ways as they will host Southside Home School next Friday.
