The community is invited to celebrate the addition of eight new murals as part of the 2024 Putnam County Mural Festival with two community block parties on Sept. 21.

The first will include family-friendly activities from 3-4:30 p.m. at Micaela Cancilla Park (603 Ohio St., Greencastle) and the second will be a downtown block party featuring live music just north of the courthouse square (114 N. Indiana St., Greencastle) from 6-8 p.m.

Free, family-friendly activities at the afternoon event will include pumpkin painting, a basketball shootout competition, snacks, a mural artist meet-and-greet, face painting and more.

The first 25 families to visit the Putnam County Mural Project tent will receive a free copy of the picture book “Hey Wall,” by Susan Verde. Attendees will be able to see the two new murals by Emily Eldridge located by the park.

In addition to live music by War Radio, food and drink will be available for purchase at the evening event. A ribbon cutting will mark the end of the festival and guided walking tours will highlight the five murals in the downtown area — the new murals at The Warehouse and Furniture Awarehouse, as well as the existing murals on the Banner Graphic building, the Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Dick’s Barber Shop.

This year’s community block party events are made possible by the support of these sponsors: Athletico, Putnam County Hospital, Stewart Homes, The Bodega Greencastle, Furniture Awarehouse and Furr Insurance Agency.

“The support and excitement from the community about this year’s mural festival has been incredible,” Mural Project co-founder Kristen Fuhs Wells said. “We can’t wait to celebrate with activities that might inspire the next generation of artists, and with our funders and other community supporters. We hope everyone will come out to enjoy the celebration.”

The Putnam County Mural Project is an initiative of the Friends of the Park of Putnam County, an exempt, 501(c)(3) organization that supports outdoor recreation and nature-related projects in Putnam County, Indiana.

It would seem we have developed a small war chest for enriching the recreational programs of Putnam County. I ask any of the 26+ board members: What’s next? We only have so many buildings we can pay people to paint. July 4th is once a year.
