Senior night at Greencastle resulted in a pair of wins for the soccer programs as the Tiger Cubs hosted West Vigo Tuesday evening.

Despite being frustrated by the Vikings in the opener, the girls’ team broke through in the second half for a 3-0 win while boys’ squad scored within the opening two minutes of the match as part of a 6-1 win.

In the girls’ match, West Vigo played a deep defensive shell that frustrated Greencastle for much of the night as the hosts struggled to get clean looks on goal with so many bodies in the way.

The breakthrough came in the second half as Eva Battin saved a ball down the right side and pulled back to Ali Dobbs, the latter taking a low angled shot that froze Lily Krause in goal as two other Tiger Cubs could have run on to redirect the attempt, allowing the ball to trickle into the far corner.

Battin secured the win 16 minutes from the end after Lilly Welch pushed the ball to Penny Cummings on the left, the latter moving in and offloading to Battin, who took one touch and launched a powerful shot from outside the box above Krause and in.

Dobbs and Battin combined for the third and final goal following a rare Viking foray into Tiger Cub territory.

With the defense stretched for once, Dobbs drove through the midfield and sent a through ball to Battin down the middle, the junior chasing it down and rifling past Krause three minutes from time.

In the boys’ match, Greencastle got off to a quick start when Milyn Tucker poked the ball away from a West Vigo defender, outran his man and hit a low shot for a 1-0 lead.

Sam Hanlon saved a long ball down the right six minutes later with his pullback touched on to Cyrus Gurnon whose shot bounced off the goalkeeper's hands and over the line to double the lead eight minutes in.

The hosts made it 3-0 10 minutes later when Fischer Barcus took the ball off a defender down the left and his quick cross was headed in by Anthony Peters.

Madden Slagle added the fourth from a Tucker corner 15 minutes from the break but the Vikings had time to find a goal before the break.

Too relaxed as halftime approached, the Tiger Cubs sold a series of passes short before one was intercepted by Draik Mason, who caught Conor Petrie well out of goal and hit a long-distance shot over the stranded goalkeeper to make it 4-1.

Greencastle needed 49 seconds of the second half to get the goal back as a long pass down the right made its way to Hanlon, who slotted home.

The final tally of the night came 11 minutes from time as Mythius Slagle forced a running battle for the ball with a defender with Peters arriving to finish the turnover and slot in.

Seniors Dobbs, Laurel Brown, Kylie Silbert, Lauren Dibble and Dylan Barcus were honored in between matches.

Greencastle’s girls face Brown County at home Thursday before both squads host Sullivan Saturday.
