Donald L. Weaver

Donald L. Weaver, 86, Greencastle, died on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, joining all the saints who from their labor’s rest, who Jesus Christ by faith before the world confessed.

Born April 18, 1938, in Galesburg, Ill., he was the son of Elizabeth and Paul Weaver.

He was a 1959 graduate of the University of Illinois and received his master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York, in 1961.

Don was an active member of the United Methodist Church for many years, serving with the Board of Global Ministries for seven years. He later became an active member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder.

He was also a member of the Greencastle Kiwanis Club and served as president from 1990 to 1991. Don helped to coordinate the Kiwanis Club fundraising for Riley Hospital at the Plainfield rest stop three times each summer for many years.

A renaissance man, Don’s careers included the following:

1. Mathematics teacher at Greenwich High School (Connecticut) and physics and chemistry high school teacher at the College of West Africa (Monrovia, Liberia).

2. Systems Analyst at NCR Corp. (Dayton, Ohio), Kettering Medical Center (Kettering, Ohio), Union College (Barbourville, Ky.), and DePauw University’s administrative computing department (Greencastle).

3. Commercial Driver (CDL) (Indianapolis) and Putnam County Public Library bookmobile driver (Greencastle).

4. Local History and Genealogy Department chair, Putnam County Public Library.

He was an avid stamp collector, railroad enthusiast and traveler. Don and Kay welcomed many people from all walks of life and geographic origins into their lives and their home.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and son, Richard Clinton Weaver.

He is survived by his wife, Kay Munson Weaver; his children, Karen, David (Pam) and Randi (Lolita); grandchildren Octavian, Mary, Jaime and Quentin; Liberian daughter Kiapeh (Henrique) and grandchildren Danu, PT and Normeni; Japanese daughter Cosmo (Wansik) and grandchildren Sion, Sharon, and Sarong; and Chinese son Tom.

The memorial service will be held at the Greencastle Presbyterian Church on Friday, Oct. 4,. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until commencement of the service at 10:30 a.m. A reception in the fellowship hall will follow.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Don to Riley Children’s Hospital (Indianapolis) or SAWs (Servants at Work, Greencastle Presbyterian Church ramp ministry).
