A new exhibit is coming to the Putnam County Museum. Beginning Sunday, Oct. 6 a unique exhibit of contemporary quilts will be shown as the exhibit will be titled “Not Your Grandma’s Quilt.”

One Stitch at a Time and Sew Many Stitches, two of the Putnam County Extension Homemaker quilt clubs, will be featuring 21st-century designs created by local artists.

The exhibit will feature quilts by Judy Bailey, Bonnie Bryan, Judy Burg, Darla Clodfelter, Anita Custis, Cindy Grubbs, Jan Hodges, Debbie Kirby, Glenda Pate, Sandy McCloud, Jo McPhail, Amy Sebring, Sue Stattner, Charmaine Tesmer, Mary Vermillion, Claire Winnings and Nola Zimmerman.

Grandma’s quilts were often made from feed sacks and bits of fabric from worn-out clothing with each piece holding a memory of family and times gone by. Time, technology and the vasty array and availability of fabric and tools have changed the look of quilts. The clubs embrace the joy of quilting as a means of of expression using the fabric, texture, color and patterns with the hope of leaving behind a legacy of love and memories for children and grandchildren.

“This exhibit showcases an inspiration selection of over 50 quilts created in Putnam County by these talented women,” Museum Executive Director Rachel Lewis said. “There will be something for everyone in the county to admire.”

“We hope this exhibit will excite the viewers with the talented workmanship on display during the next few months at the museum,” added Gwen Morris, who chairs the Exhibits Committee.

The exhibit will last through Jan. 17. During the course of the exhibit there will be two quilts raffled off that were donated to the museum. The first quilt will be raffled off at the opening reception of the exhibit this Sunday, Oct 6. The reception will last from 2-4 p.m. The museum invites the community out to the reception as it’s free and open to the public.
