Tiger Cubs end regular season with win over Patriots

The Greencastle Tiger Cub boys’ soccer team picked up its ninth win of the season, downing the Terre Haute North Patriots 2-0 Wednesday evening.

Second half goals from Madden and Mythius Slagle and big saves from Connor Petrie ensured the victory.

In the first half, the Patriots controlled the pace of play. They looked to counter attack quickly and use their front line speed, sneaking behind the defense as Logan LeFever had a great chance, but Petrie stepped out of goal and got a foot on the shot attempt to deny the Patriots.

Terre Haute North had another great chance in the opening half. A Tiger Cub foul gave the visitors a free kick from just outside the box. The kick sailed just over the crossbar as the game remained scoreless for the half.

The second looked like the same story to start. Another through ball broke the Patriot attacker free, but he could not finish. North earned three corner kicks, the last which proved to be dangerous.

The ball fell to a Patriot and was quickly shot through the defense. Once again, Petrie was up to the task.

The game turned about a minute later. The Cubs had earned a corner of their own. Milyn Tucker sent the kick into the box where it found the head of Madden Slagle and bounced it past the keeper for the game’s first goal.

“Madden has scored a bunch of headers for a freshman. That changed the whole game,” Tiger Cub head coach JD Sims said.

The game did change as North had to push forward, which opened up space for Greencastle.

With four and half minutes left, Tucker sent a cross into the box and found Mythius Slagle, who put it in the back of the net for a huge 2-0 lead.

Greencastle was able to kill off the rest of the time and come away with the victory.

Greencastle is now 9-5-1 on the season. They will host the Class 2A Sectional beginning Monday as they battle the West Vigo Vikings. The winner will play Owen Valley on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
