Tiger Cubs sweep Cougars to stay in WIC volleyball race

Friday, October 4, 2024

Greencastle’s volleyball team is playing some of their best volleyball at the right time of the year, sweeping the North Putnam Cougars 25-12, 25-17, 25-15.

Thirteen service aces and and eight blocks paced the Cubs to victory.

Greencastle came out firing on all cylinders in the opening set. All parts of the game were working with six aces from an aggressive service line keeping the Cougars on their heels while the offense was able to be free flowing and hit its spots, committing only three hitting errors in the set.

Mackenzie Creviston had a strong night at the net and finished off the opening set on an overpass that she hammered down to close out a 25-12 set win.

North regrouped and came out battling in the second set. The Cougars started handling the serves and getting into their own offense.

A Melanie Davies kill gave the visitors their first lead of the night at 12-11. The Cubs responded with four-straight points, including three-straight aces from Allie Landry. The hosts used the momentum as the powerful middle duo of Creviston and Keely Amis combined for six points down the stretch.

Greencastle’s lone senior, Kaitlin Welker, served the final five points and the Cubs took set two 25-17.

North started strong in the third set. Maylee Mason had a block and kill early while kills from Tori Detro, Davies and Hailee Daigle kept the Cougars close, tied at 6-6. Greencastle’s strength of serving and defense then began to take over. A pair of kills and an ace from Amis and three more blocks from Creviston put the Cubs in control.

With Greencastle up seven, a kill from Creviston and an ace from Meilani York set up match point.

In fitting fashion, Creviston stuffed the attempt and the Cubs won 25-15.

“(Mackenzie) did a really good job tonight. She is doing a really good job blocking and with her hitting, we’re trying to work her to back off and back in as much as possible,” Tiger Cub coach Denise Meyer said.

Greencastle moves to 17-8 on the season and 7-1 in the conference, tied for second.

Creviston led the attack with nine kills and seven blocks. Amis added five kills and four aces. Landry had six aces to pace the Cubs 13 total.

Greencastle has two conference games left, Tuesday at Owen Valley and Thursday at Indian Creek, who they are tied with.

North was led by Davies with five kills and Mack Mason added four.

The Cougars now 7-16. Saturday they travel to Brown County and Tuesday host Cascade.

“Greencastle came out serving well and we didn’t pass the ball well tonight. Hopefully we will be better at that in two weeks,” Cougar coach Jenny Heron said.
