Mustangs make it 2-for-2 in Putnam County with sweep of Cougars

Thursday, October 10, 2024

BAINBRIDGE — It was senior night at North Putnam, but the Edgewood Mustangs put a damper on the evening, sweeping the Cougar volleyball team in straight sets 25-17, 25-15, 25-21 to wrap up the regular season.

The Mustangs, coming off a win over South Putnam on Tuesday, came out firing on all cylinders. A pair of aces from Bella May set the tone, as Edgewood jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead.

North was having issues handling the aggressive serving, not allowing it to get into its offense.

Edgewood continued to ride strong hitting, extending the advantage to as many as 11 and would go on for a 25-17 set one victory.

Set two was a little sloppy to start from both sides. Senior Mack Mason had a couple kills trying to keep the hosts close.

A six-point run by the Mustangs, featuring three straight kills from Ella LaRoche, boosted them to a 16-6 lead.

North’s Melanie Davies had a pair of kills, but it was too much Mustangs, as they held on to a 25-15 win.

“They came out serving very aggressive and we were not ready for it,” said Cougar coach Jenny Herron.

Set three was another story. The Cougar began receiving and getting into their offense. Morgan Berry and Davies each had a pair of kills early on to spark a 10-8 North lead.

A pair of aces from Maylee Mason then pulled North out to a 14-10 advantage and the hosts held the lead until late in the set.

Another six-point run from the Mustangs, included two aces from Olivia Edgeman, reversed the momentum.

The Cougars countered with a kill and an ace from Tori Detro and a kill from Davies to tie it at 21-21 but the Mustang took the last four points as two aces from Cora Emmons closed the match.

Davies led the offense with five kills, Morgan Berry and Maylee Mason each added three. Maylee added a pair of aces for the Cougars.

North finishes the season 7-19 and will prepare for sectionals. They have a bye in the opening round and will face either host Southmont or South Putnam in semifinal number two.

Edgewood was led by Bella May with nine kills, while Edgeman and LaRoche combined for eleven. May added three blocks and three aces for an all-around good performance.
