County Jail

Three people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

• At 12:42 a.m. Todd Choatie, 51, Buffalo, Ill., was lodged at the jail for driving while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance.

• At 12:11 a.m. Ian Young, 24, Indianapolis, was taken into custody for possession of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana.

Thursday

• At 7:29 p.m. James Smilko, 53, Indianapolis, was housed at the jail for driving while intoxicated, resisting law enforcement, reckless driving and possession of marijuana.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to several calls from Oct. 10-14:

• At 10:19 a.m. Thursday, crews received notice of a downed power line at 301 E. Washington St. When they arrived they found a power line on a vehicle. Upon investigation they were communication lines. The caller was notified and crews returned to service at 10:30 a.m.

• At 4:25 p.m. Thursday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 301 E. Seminary St. Upon investigation it was determined that the alarm system was activated due to cooking. Crews ventilated the building, reset the alarm and returned to service at 4:41 p.m. 

• At 9:29 a.m. Friday, GFD was called to a building fire at 309 N. Indiana St. Crews arrived to find a fire coming from the rear of the home. Crews initially applied water from the outside and then made entry into the home. Once the fire was out, crews performed overhaul to ensure the fire had not extended anywhere. They then ventilated the home and returned to service at 11:03 a.m. No injuries were reported and GFD was assisted on scene by Cloverdale Fire, Madison Fire, Bainbridge Fire, Greencastle Police, Putnam County EMS and Duke Energy. 

• At 11:05 p.m. Friday, crews responded to a motor vehicle accident with no injuries at the intersection of Jackson St. and Jackson Blvd. Crews arrived to a minivan that had sideswiped a semi. All individuals were out of the vehicle and no injuries were reported. Fluids and debris were cleared from the roadway and crews returned to service at 11:45 p.m. 

• At 11:11 a.m. Saturday, GFD received notice of a fire alarm at 420 Anderson St. Upon investigation it was determined that the alarm system was activated due to cooking. Crews reset the alarm and returned to service at 11:22 p.m. 

• At 4:39 p.m. Saturday, GFD responded to an odor investigation at 1113 Indianapolis Rd. Crews were called to the location because of the smell of something hot. They checked the building and determined the smell to be coming from a humidifier. The unit was removed from the building and crews returned to service at 4:54 p.m.

• At 5:39 p.m. Saturday, firefighters were dispatched on a service call to 315 Bloomington St. Crews were called to the location for an issue with an outlet. They investigated and determined that the outlet was faulty and advised the owner to move the individuals from the room until repairs could be made. Crews returned to service at 6:25 p.m.
