TERRE HAUTE — Ten Putnam County athletes advanced to the Brownsburg Cross Country Regional after competing at the IHSAA Cross Country Terre Haute North and Ben Davis sectionals Saturday morning.

At LaVern Gibson, South Putnam’s Gabe Feltner (16:32) held off Greencastle’s Landon Miller (16:33) for the runner-up position behind South Vermillion’s Karter Jackson, who won the boys’ race in 16:23.

“Gabe had another great battle with Landon and we really enjoy watching those two compete with each other,” South Putnam head coach Brandon Welti said. “Obviously, we were pumped for Gabe to get second. He's setting a really high bar for himself going forward.”

Eagle Landon Chew (18:29), as well as Cloverdale pair Evan Barnett (19:23) and Mason Paauwe (19:46) also advanced while Clover Jayden Armstrong-Diggs (19:59) was the first runner outside the advancement positions.

“As far as our two moving on, Mason ran a big PR to qualify, so we were so excited for that,” Cloverdale head coach Aleksey Stewart said. “Going into today, we knew Evan would be close as long as he had a good race, so it was great to see him go out and achieve it.

“We're obviously disappointed that Jayden didn't make it out. It's always a tough feeling to be the first one out but it's very encouraging to get him so close his freshman year.”

Tiger Cub Colleen Bossnack (20:54) finished fourth in the girls’ race and will be joined by teammate Lydia Miller (23:42) as well as South Putnam’s Elise Kendall (23:48) at the regional.

“I was happy for those three,” Greencastle head coach Brian Hammett said about his advancers. “I'm greedy and wanted to send more, but I will do what I can from this point forward to help Colleen, Lydia and Landon succeed next week.”

“Elise also had a great race, and this was a great bounce back from last week,” Welti added. “She's still not 100 percent, but hopefully she'll be there by next weekend.”

Terre Haute South won the boys’ team title over Northview 38-52 with Clay City, Terre Haute North and Shakamak advancing to the regional as teams. South Putnam was the top county finisher, placing seventh (172), a point behind South Vermillion, while Cloverdale (233) was ninth and Greencastle (266) 12th overall.

The Braves also won the girls’ team title 41-50 over the Knights with Owen Valley, Terre Haute North and South Vermillion advancing to the regional as teams. Greencastle (202) finished eighth with South Putnam (253) 10th overall.

Behind Feltner and Chew for the Eagles were Bryan Bye (20:06), Isaac Boyce (20:21), Gunner Roach (20:33), Paxton Church (20:48) and Noah Couch (22:04).

“I feel like we could have advanced as a team if everyone was at 100 percent,” Welti said. “Nonetheless, we are pleased with the results, especially when you compare it to what many of the other sectionals looked like.

“We had quite a few PRs and season best times, and that's what you are looking for at the end of the season. All in all, it was a pretty good day.”

Behind Miller for the Tiger Cubs was Caleb Edwards (20:16), Wilson Hecko (22:51), Jackson Corey (24:39), Miles Jernagan (27:38) and Gavin Colwell (31:38).

“I am glad both Wilson and Miles persevered through adversity,” Hammett noted as both runners had various struggles near the end of the race. “We had many runners finish with PRs on their last race of the season, and I am proud of all the work they did throughout the year.”

Cloverdale times included Spencer Nees (20:58), Joseph Patton (22:56) and Nicholas Day (25:22).

“Overall we've had very good progression this year,” Stewart said. “The kids have bought into the hard work and training and we've been hitting personal bests right when we need to, so a lot of positives right now.

“As a team we were talking and we've really exceeded what some of our team and individual goals were at the start of the season. It was a great cap to our team season today.

“Now we're looking to go run a fast race next weekend at Brownsburg and try to finish off with a couple more PRs for our two who made it.”

Behind Bossnack and Miller in the girls’ race for the Tiger Cubs were Eliana Dinn (28:15), Madilyn Hiatt (29:15), Adelynn Moore (30:49), Charlotte Hall (32:42) and Anastasia Graham (39:28).

Behind Kendall for the Eagles was Delaney Fugate (26:43), Addalyn Brinkman (27:54), Molly Trammell (31:26), Joslyn Bumgardner (31:47), Victoria Paige (32:51) and July Owen (34:32).

“For our team, one of the top races was Addie,” Welti said. “She has been steadily improving all season and then shaved around three minutes off of her time.

“Again, it was overall a pretty good day.”

Cloverdale’s Haley Patton finished the race in 41:17.

At Ben Davis, North Putnam saw two runners advance in Jacy Huffman (21:02) in the girls’ race and Jeremiah Miles (16:36) in the boys’ race.

“I’m extremely happy for both Jeremiah and Jacy,” North Putnam head coach Kevin Lutes said. “They are two of the three seniors who have really stepped up this year.

“Both, incidentally, have worked extra hard to split their time between soccer and XC and make both work. Both also ran lifetime PRs today.”

The Cougars finished ninth overall in the boys’ race (248) with Brownsburg clearing rivals Avon 33-77 for the team title while the girls (283) finished 11th overall with Brebeuf Jesuit having a strong showing in winning the team title on 21 points.

Elijah Harless (17:43) and Corbin Conner (17:44) were first in behind Miles, followed by Thomas Nelson (18:10), Owen O’Hair (19:46), Zane Eakle (20:53) and Kaleb Walton (24:06).

Behind Huffman was Barbie Fuchs (22:42), Brooke Hensley (24:24), Erica Zatorski (25:20), Kaylee Hoover (25:30) and Sienna Williams (30:04).

“Barbi, Erica, Corbin and Thomas all ran lifetime PRs while Sienna had a first season PR,” Lutes said. “Overall, the kids did mostly what we hoped short of getting a few more individuals to advance.

“Barbi, Eli and Corbin were just out of reach, so that stinks for them, but they ran their best and still have some time to make that happen over the next year or two. We are proud of what our kids have been able to accomplish this season, and look forward to the years ahead.”
