Stay ahead of the flu this season: Health Department expands flu and COVID prevention efforts

Monday, October 21, 2024

As flu season approaches, the Putnam County Health Department is expanding our flu and COVID efforts.

Prioritizing the health of you and your family is essential. Influenza (the flu) is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by three types of influenza viruses: A, B and C.

While it often seems like a seasonal nuisance, the flu can lead to severe complications, especially for children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

This season, PCHD is stepping up its commitment to public health with the 2024-25 influenza and COVID vaccine formula, now available for residents.

What to Know About the Flu and COVID

The flu virus and COVID are very similar and spread easily through respiratory droplets, making it particularly common in close-contact settings. Key symptoms include:

• Fever or chills,

• Cough,

• Sore throat,

• Runny or stuffy nose,

• Muscle or body aches,

• Headaches and

• Fatigue.

Children may also experience vomiting or diarrhea, which are less common in adults. Symptoms typically begin one to four days after exposure, and those infected can spread the virus up to a day before feeling ill and as long as a week afterward.

Vaccine: Your Best Defense

Health experts agree that the annual flu and COVID vaccines is the most effective way to prevent infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that influenza and COVID vaccines not only reduce the risk of flu and COVID-related illness but also minimize the chances of complications that could result in hospitalization or death. In addition to vaccination, the CDC recommends everyday preventive actions such as covering coughs and sneezes, frequent handwashing and keeping distance from people who are sick. Remember the three Cs: Cover, Clean and Contain.

Insurance typically covers the flu and COVID vaccines at 100 percent, making it an accessible option for many. We also offer programs for those who are uninsured or underinsured.

The Putnam County Health Department is now offering the latest flu and COVID-19 vaccine formula at its Greencastle office.

“We’re here to ensure that everyone in our community has the opportunity to protect themselves and their families against the flu,” said Dr. Adam Amos, public health officer. Residents can schedule an appointment by calling 765-653-0203.
